Two genuinely different things landed on this company inside twelve months: a permanent enlargement of the business, and a war. The market pays one multiple on the blended cash flow that results. Working out which share of it survives the war is the entire exercise, because one half is worth paying for and the other is rent.
Chevron earned $12.1 billion in the three months to June 2026 — more than it earned across the whole of the first half of 2025 . The stock did not wait for the confirmation. It bottomed at $146.49 last December and has climbed 43% to $209.51 as of September 18, tracking crude higher through the spring and leaving it within 4% of a 52-week high of $217.78 .
At $417 billion of market value, Chevron is the smaller of America's two integrated supermajors — Exxon Mobil carries $676 billion — and it reports in two segments, Upstream and Downstream, each split between the United States and international, with a corporate All Other line that ran at negative $978 million in the June quarter . Downstream supplies most of the revenue. Upstream supplies most of the earnings, and last quarter it supplied $8.2 billion of the $12.1 billion .
A fifth more barrels, $8 billion of debt retired, and a war, all in one quarter
The structural half is unusually well documented. Net oil-equivalent production reached 4,070 thousand barrels a day against 3,396 a year earlier , a 20% increase the company attributes to the legacy Hess assets plus growth in the Permian and the Gulf of America ; U.S. upstream alone set a record at 2,077 thousand barrels a day, up 382,000 . Alongside the volume, management reached its $3 billion structural cost-reduction target six months early and captured $1.5 billion of Hess synergies, 50% above the initial goal, while cutting total debt by $8.4 billion in a single quarter to $37.1 billion of debt and finance leases . Net debt now sits at 0.6 times trailing-twelve-month cash flow from operations . Quarterly return on capital employed printed 21.4%, against 13.0% for the half .
The cyclical half is equally documented and much larger in the quarter's arithmetic. International liquids realized $96.41 a barrel against $58.88 a year earlier — a 64%...
