Embraer's Record Backlog Is Real, But Its Margin Breakout Is Just a Tax Credit

At 16x guided 2026 adjusted operating profit and 34x the guided cash floor, with clean margin lower than a year ago and the 2027 step resting on suppliers, Embraer's equity is fully valued — a franchise worth owning at a price the market is no longer offering.

On August 10 the Brazilian planemaker raised its 2026 adjusted EBIT margin guidance to 10.0%–10.6% from 8.7%–9.3% and doubled the floor of its free cash flow outlook to US$400 million or higher, and the shares rose about 7% on the day . Then came the footnote almost nobody traded on. Of the roughly US$110 million added to the midpoint of implied 2026 adjusted EBIT, US$68 million was an extraordinary tax credit, US$38 million was the exemption from direct U.S. import tariffs in the second half, and US$4 million — five basis points of the 130 — came from an improved business outlook .

Embraer is the world's third-largest commercial aircraft manufacturer and a genuinely rare asset: no Western rival builds a purpose-built regional jet below the gauge of the Airbus A220, and around that franchise sit a business-jet line, an aftermarket arm, and a military transport program winning air forces one by one. Its four reporting segments split 2025 revenue of US$7.6 billion — 96.6% of it dollar-denominated — into Commercial Aviation at 31.3%, Executive Aviation at 29.1%, Services & Support at 25.4%, Defense & Security at 13.0%, and an "Others" remainder of 1.2% that houses crop dusters, the Tempest cyber unit and a landing-gear business . Firm backlog reached US$34.5 billion in the second quarter, a seventh consecutive record, on the highest second-quarter deliveries in sixteen years . The stock has returned 409% over three years and trades at ~$74.06 intraday on September 16, against a 52-week range of $53.56–$80.75 and a market capitalization of $13.59 billion .

The franchise is trend-right. The price now assumes the factory has proved something it has not.

Strip the credit out and the highest-volume quarter in sixteen years showed negative operating leverage

Embraer publishes the number that settles this, and it is buried in the appendix of the results deck. Excluding U.S. tariffs and tax credits, adjusted EBIT was US$237 million at a 10.6% margin in the second quarter of 2026, against US$202 million at 11.1% a year earlier . Revenue grew 23% in dollars — the currency Embraer reports in — to US$2,235 million ; clean adjusted EBIT grew 17%. Fifty basis points of clean margin went the wrong way.

One quarter does not...
