Quanta Services and the Backlog That Hasn't Booked Yet
The most important number Quanta Services reported on July 30 was not the one everyone quoted. Second-quarter revenue of $9.56 billion, up 41% on the $6.77 billion of a year earlier, and adjusted earnings of $4.24 a share against a Street expectation near $3.29 were the headlines that pushed the stock up roughly 14% on the day. But the number that actually frames the investment case is a negative one: management's assertion that "95%" of the largest transmission corridors and generation programs it is pursuing are not yet in a record $53.4 billion backlog . Quanta is a specialty infrastructure contractor whose leading indicators still sit ahead of its reported revenue line — and that gap between what has been booked and what management says is coming is the entire debate on the stock.
Strip away the ticker and Quanta is a labor company dressed as a construction company. It builds and maintains the physical grid — high-voltage transmission lines, substations, distribution networks — plus a growing book of power-generation and data-center "balance-of-plant" work, and a smaller underground business in gas utility integrity and industrial mechanical services. It reports in two segments: Electric Power Infrastructure, which at $7.84 billion was 82% of Q2 revenue, and Underground and Infrastructure at $1.72 billion, or 18% . The moat is not a patent or a network effect; it is a roughly 85,000-person craft workforce that self-performs 80–85% of the work it wins on live, permitting-heavy, safety-critical systems . Revenue is overwhelmingly domestic — the United States was 93% of FY25 sales, with Canada and Australia the modest remainder — so this is a leveraged play on one thing: the multi-year rebuild of the American electric grid.
Three things the print settled
First, the growth is organic, not bought. It is easy to dismiss a serial acquirer's 41% top-line jump as a roll-up flattering itself, and Quanta did close three deals in the quarter — Phalcon, Percheron and PSD — with a fourth,...
