Darling Ingredients Is a Deleveraging Cash Machine the Market Still Prices as a Commodity Rendering Play

The market is treating a normalizing-from-peak renewable-diesel earner as a fluke and pricing the whole enterprise as a commodity rendering play, when the balance sheet is de-risking fast, the buyback retires a tenth of the float, and the collagen core compounds on its own clock.

For the three months to early July, a company most investors file under "packaged foods" earned $2.41 in GAAP diluted profit — more than its entire prior fiscal year, in which it made $0.39 . Darling Ingredients is the world's largest processor of animal by-products, converting what slaughterhouses and restaurants discard into three streams of ingredients: proteins and fats for animal feed, gelatin and collagen for food and nutrition, and fats that feed a renewable-diesel plant. That last stream is the whole story of the stock — and the reason the market cannot decide what the business is worth. Shares closed at $59.41, up more than 70% over the trailing year and roughly double the 52-week low of $29.15, yet still 10% shy of the $66.02 high . The tension the equity embodies is simple to state and hard to resolve: is the profit engine that produced that quarter a durable franchise, or a policy-driven windfall the market has seen collapse before and refuses to underwrite?

My argument is that the crowd is right about the windfall and wrong about the consequence. The renewable-diesel earnings genuinely are running above any sustainable mid-cycle level and will fade. But the same cash cycle that produced the peak is deleveraging the balance sheet toward its lowest point in years and has just unlocked a buyback large enough to retire a tenth of the equity — and the market, fixated on the fading numerator, is ignoring the shrinking denominator. At roughly 8x forward earnings , the stock is priced for the fade and gives away the deleveraging and the compounding collagen business for free.

Three Businesses, One Swing Factor

Darling reports in three segments, and it is worth placing all of them before narrowing. Feed Ingredients — rendering fats and proteins into feed and pet-food inputs — is the largest at roughly two-thirds of consolidated revenue, and it delivered $240.5 million of segment...
