In reduced-risk products, PMI’s IQOS is the global leader in heated tobacco, holding a 31.7% share in Japan’s heat-not-burn category and a 9.1% share of combined cigarette and HTU industry volumes in its core markets. ZYN, acquired via Swedish Match, commands a 66.8% U.S. retail value share in nicotine pouches.

PMI’s global scale is a significant barrier to entry. The company operates in over 100 markets, leveraging a distribution and regulatory affairs infrastructure that few rivals can match. This reach enables rapid deployment of new products and adaptation to local regulatory environments.

R&D investment is another edge: PMI has invested over $14 billion since 2008 in smoke-free product development, outpacing British American Tobacco (BAT) and Japan Tobacco (JT) in both spend and speed to market. PMI’s scientific substantiation has led to first-mover regulatory wins, including the only FDA-authorized “modified risk” claims for both IQOS and ZYN.

While BAT and JT are formidable, PMI’s superior brand equity, global reach, and regulatory track record underpin its leadership in both traditional and next-generation nicotine products.
