Onto Innovation’s primary competitive advantage lies in its specialization at the intersection of advanced semiconductor packaging and process control. The company’s Dragonfly and Atlas platforms are qualified at leading-edge customers such as TSMC and Samsung, enabling sub-micron inspection and metrology for high-bandwidth memory (HBM), 2.5D/3D packaging, and gate-all-around logic—segments where process complexity and yield sensitivity are rising sharply. This positions ONTO as a mission-critical supplier as AI and heterogeneous integration drive new manufacturing bottlenecks.

Switching costs are high: once ONTO’s tools are qualified in a customer’s process, replacement is costly and time-consuming, often requiring 12–18 months for requalification. This “stickiness” is reinforced by a growing installed base and recurring service and software revenue, which now comprise roughly one-third of total sales.

Compared to KLA—the dominant process control player with a broader portfolio and R&D budget nearly 10x larger—ONTO is more narrowly focused but has carved out defensible niches in advanced packaging and specialty devices. Smaller peers like Nova and Camtek are more profitable in their respective niches but lack ONTO’s breadth across both front- and back-end process steps.

Risks include KLA’s scale advantage and potential for aggressive expansion, as well as customer concentration (top three customers account for nearly 50% of revenue). Nonetheless, ONTO’s deep customer integration, technical differentiation, and exposure to secular growth in AI packaging underpin its competitive edge.
