Green Plains’ principal competitive advantage lies in its transition from a traditional ethanol producer to a diversified biorefinery platform. The company has invested heavily in proprietary technologies—such as Maximized Stillage Co-products (MSC) and Clean Sugar Technology (CST)—which enable the production of higher-margin, value-added products like ultra-high protein feed and low-carbon dextrose. Green Plains is also an early mover in carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), with three Nebraska plants on track to begin CCS operations in late 2025.
